 · Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, trans people, and even certain heterosexuals are deemed “queer.” It is the favored term because it removes most of the distinctions between members of each group and as such, people in the “queer community” who hold privilege over others are spared from having to acknowledge it.

Which begs the question, when do I become queer enough to claim queerness? Is it just a matter of saying it? Is it only true and real once it’s been said? If I don’t “speak it into existence,” am I doing a disservice to myself and to a whole community? These are the questions that have been somersaulting through my mind for the past year.

 · I am not gay nor lesbian nor bisexual nor transgender. I am not anything other than just queer. There are people who some of you might call “straight” if you looked at them and their partners and impose genders onto them, but who are actually “queer.” And many gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals do not identify as queer.
